Are you going to southern California or northern? California is a very big state- it takes around 15 hours to drive from the north end to the south. I've actually found flying to be cheaper or the same as the bus- and flying will be a lot easier and much faster. I'd recommend searching www.travelocity.com, Chicago to San Francisco or Los Angeles is usually pretty cheap and you can search on flexible dates. I did a quick search and Chicago to Ontario (50 miles from LA) is only $178, to LA its $218, Chicago to San Francisco is $180. Unfortunately you can't reserve bus or plane tickets, you just have to purchase right away. The best deals are usually found 1-2 months before your trip. If you go less than 2 weeks from when you purchase they'll be a lot higher.
